THE ISSUES……

PUBLIC or PRIVATE OWNERSHIP

Adequate, existing legislation hasn’t been enforced by successive governments and the water companies have been allowed to pollute with impunity, paying £85 billion to shareholders since privatisation resulting in……

  • lack of investment

  • inadequate sewage works, blockages, leaks and spills

  • weak and further weakened regulators

  • outdated reliance on Combined Sewage Outfalls (CSOs) which are allowed to discharge in ‘exceptional’ circumstances. The water companies have their own interpretation of ‘exceptional’

  • automatic right to connect new developments without ensuring the system has the capacity

…….compounded by……

  • climate change resulting in intense rain and flooding

  • run off from roads, buildings and paving - more in recent years

  • population increase

  • loss of flora and fauna

  • lying and cheating!

……………….and it’s not just sewage……..

  • intensive poultry farms - more than 60 chickens per person in Shropshire

  • road run off

  • forever chemicals

  • pharmaceuticals

  • animal flea and worm treatments
